I've begun posting my larger paintings on my website www.jimoberst.com and its associated blog www.jimoberst.blogspot.com. I'm posting a new painting just about every week. This painting - A Splendid Day - is this week's new painting.
These paintings are also available postpaid via one-click, with the price roughly based on size. I hope you'll follow that blog too, and get twice the enjoyment from these additional images! If you'd like to subscribe to my monthly email newsletter, drop me an email at jim@jimoberst.com.

Long Shadows - #60 - Original Watercolor Painting
In this little painting I've tried to capture the mysterious feel created by long shadows at the end of the day.

Biding Time - #58 - Original Watercolor Painting
Here's a beautiful sailboat I happened upon during a recent trip to Nova Scotia, a beautiful region for sailing. I got the feeling that this sailboat was just biding its time waiting for its crew to sail it away to adventure.

Day's End - #57 - Original Watercolor Painting
In this painting, the focus is on a beautiful early evening sunset. The boatmen are pulling their boats up onto shore to keep them safe overnight. This painting was born and developed in my imagination.

Country Church - #56 - Original Watercolor Painting
This is a painting of a country church in Normandy, France. I love the texture in the old walls and the green field and dark trees which frame the buildings. I saw this church from the window of a coach on a highway, and knew it would make a great subject.

Heading In - #55 - Original Watercolor Painting
Here is another painting of the harbor at Rockland, Maine. There are so many picturesque scenes there for someone who is drawn to boats and the sea. The building on the pier on the right is a restaurant. The dock on the left is a working dock.

The Old Guard - #54 - Original Watercolor Painting
This painting was inspired by some seascapes that I love by two other artists. I decided to teach myself to draw these old ships, and to place them in picturesque settings. I hope to do a series of this sort of painting.

Red Rock Wash - #53 - Original Watercolor Painting
This painting is based on an area I explored in Sedona, Arizona. These "washes", or dry river beds, in the desert areas out west are bone dry most of the year, but can quickly fill with water during a rainstorm. This one had the red earth color typical of the Sedona area.
If you're interested in purchasing this 7.5" x 11" painting, or any other of my weekly watercolor paintings for $100 including shipping, or if you'd like to see more of my paintings, please visit my Weekly Watercolor website. I've made one major change to this website to accommodate this year's paintings. I've moved some of my oldest weekly watercolors to a second gallery page. Those paintings are still available to buy for $100.

Evening Lights - #52 - Original Watercolor Painting
Here is a different sort of painting. It is relatively long - 5.5 x 15" - which is good for landscapes, although it is the same area as my usual 7.5 x 11" size. It is a rural scene, but with some strange lights and shadows, which make it rather striking. This is the 52nd and final weekly watercolor painting for 2010, but I've decided to continue the project next year. Stay tuned for details.

New England Cove - Step-by-Step

I took some photos while I painted my latest weekly watercolor painting, New England Cove. Here they are, starting with the rather poor photo I took many years ago that served as a reference for this painting. You can click on any of the images for a larger version.First, a simple pencil drawing, then the basic sky and water washes. After this, some grass and roof color, followed by the dark background trees to frame the setting. The dark tree wash looks odd in the photo because it was still wet when I photographed it, and the wet surface reflected the flash onto the image. It was actually just a dark, fairly uniform wash.
Then I went to work on some of the shoreline and boat features, and then some of the details.

Finally, I darkened the foreground water, added rigging to the sailboat, and enhanced some of the color here and there, and signed the painting.
I hope you found this "demo" interesting. Some day I'll figure out how to capture a video of one of my painting efforts; until then, these stills will have to suffice, unless you can make it to one of my live demos, which I announce on my website http://www.jimoberst.com.New England Cove - #50 - Original Watercolor Painting
This is yet another painting of the New England waterfront. It's based on a very old photo I took many years ago of a calm seaside scene in the northeast. I'll be posting step-by-step images of how I painted this scene shortly on this blog.

Working Boat - #48 - Original Watercolor Painting
Here is a painting of a scene I came upon this summer in Rockland, Maine... a working boat tied up at the wharf, waiting to put out to sea for its next job.
